In the past, people often think work hard, save money first and travel later. With the GEN Y in the workforce, more young working adults have chosen to travel round the world NOW. And they do this while either earning an income along the way or embarking on budget trips.
5 Reasons you should travel while you are still young.
#1) You learnt much more than you are in your own comfort zone
Recently graduated from University or tertiary education? In the workforce for not too long probably around 2-5 years time? Don’t just stay in the office cubicle! Get out now and see the world!
Yes, you may need to accumulate work experience in the industry to build up your own credibility. You may need to work now so as to give you ample time to climb up the corporate ladder. But wait, who says you can’t take 6 months or perhaps even just 1 year out to see the world around you first. Think it from a bigger perspective, since you have seen your seniors working over 30 years of their life, surely taking out 1 year from it doesn’t really matters much.
When you had seen the world, you may realize how fortunate you are. You will treasure many more things that once was taken for granted. Personally, I am grateful for the travel opportunities that allows me to appreciate my life much more now. Having seen beggars in India, Philippines kids living on the street road, farmers having hard time planting rice, it makes me treasure whatever little things I have. Whenever one is stress out, the images you saw on your travel trip makes you think your current situation is nothing as compare to others.
You will learn much more when you see the world. And when I say see the world, it does not mean watching YouTube Videos, read travel blogs (but please continue reading my travel blog of course), going to library borrowing Lonely Planet guide books. You need to step out in the real world, experience and soak in the local culture & food.
#2) Life’s too short
Yes, life is too short to procrastinate. The worse thing in life is to procrastinate and think you can do this at later time. There is no appropriate time than to do it sooner. We often think that we need tonnes of money to travel, but you can do it in a budget way and most importantly is to see the world. We don’t deny that travel does required a sum of money, therefore it makes even more sense if you set a goal to save up from your current salary.
Let’s be frank, life is fragile. I am not being pessimistic here but is a fact that we never know when our time is up on this planet. I had always believe that we are just renting this place on Earth, so all the more we should seize the opportunity to travel and see how others are living in this world as well. It makes no sense to earn loads of money but you are unable to travel.
#3) You have boundless of energy now before hitting 30s!
It is when we are young, we feel more adventurous, wanting to try out new things. Have you heard the wiser people ever said: ” I wish I was younger, so I will be more courageous to try it”
Travel now or else you will be one of them who live to regret. “Why I didn’t travel when I was young?!” It would be nice instead if you were to say when you grow older: ” I did that when I was young. Let me relate that experience to you… ”
It is true now that technology advances allow us to prolong our life. We can easily have Botox injections and consume pills/vitamins to make us look or feel younger. However, one thing that we can’t do at least for now is having a pill that allows us to have the high energy level. As we ages and perhaps entering into our mid 60s when we are supposed to “enjoy life finally” , you realize your legs have failed you.
#4) Lack of commitment before marriage . Travel & see the world first
In our growing up years, we might be taught to go through the motions. Study, graduate and get a stable job so as to earn money and then set up a family. Have kids followed by grand kids. Then, it will be time for you to rest & relax perhaps travel time.
When you are young, you do not want to lose out in a way that seeing your peers setting up family and you may feel to be losing out in one way or another. Perhaps, you would want to think twice.
Once you are committed to set up a family, you have to worry about kids, their education, family finance, extended family expectations of you etc. Yes, it is good to setup your own family as one can take pleasure in the little things that it brings to you. However, before the heavy burdens that you have to shoulder, why not travel first so that you can fully satisfy your wanderlust before knowing its time to set up family nest and teach your children the right attitude to life approach.
#5) Take Time to Travel, Short Trips is not COUNTED
Do you have time to really travel while you are working? Each time you think and gets excited for going on a trip, before you knew it, you are back to your office cubicle going through the same old stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job and passionate in the industry. However, as much as I love work , I do also hope to explore the world too.
While employment, how many Annual Leaves can you take each time. 12 Days? 20 days? 30 days? (some do not even have that many Annual Leaves)
Do you feel like a slave at time while on holiday? You have to rush from one attractions to another, taking as much pictures. Or perhaps updating on social media the latest photos you had took, worrying at the back of your mind of some office matters etc. It is worse should you join holiday package tours when morning call is at 6am. And when you get back to the hotel after dinner it will be already past 9pm. In fact, when you travel, at time you may feel longer hours and more tiring than in office working. When you are back from your trip, you feel even tired than refresh.
So travel for longer period of time and travel while you are young!
