If you want to relax and take in the sights at your own leisure in Hualien, read on . . . . When it comes to exploring Hualien, there are 3 basic type of tour itinerary namely:
1) Taroko National Park (Recommended to go)
2) Pacific Ocean coastline ( East Coast and East Rift Valley national scenic areas)
3) Three forest recreation areas (Chinan, Fuyuan, and Zhiben)
And if you are into more adventurous activities, you can try white-water rafting, whale- and dolphin-watching (Season usually from May to Oct because the sea wave is smaller) in Hualien County.
Taroko National Park:
Beautiful and magnificent cliffs formed the Taroko National Park.
However, it takes normally more than 3 days if one want to take in all the sights. As such, if you have only 2 Days to spare at Hualien, why not consider visit the most famous attraction which is touring the majestic Taroko Gorge National Park and perhaps include the famous scenic spot that is facing Pacific Ocean: Chingshui Cliff 清水斷崖. It was famous because the water consisted of different minerals and thus forming a 3 layers shade. It is along the Su-Hua Expressway.
七星潭 Cliff:
Like touring other many area in Taiwan, all you need is contact of a local tour guide who will act as your taxi driver at the same time. Meet Mr Lee, who is friendly and engage his service for 1 entire day (9am- 7pm).
He will pick customer up from the hotel you stay in and drop you off all for a cost of around NT$2,800 per car which can takes up to 4 passengers.
He is informative and easy going guy. He keep offering us water during the drive and offers to take photos while accompany you the hike up at times. During the trip, I was feeling unwell and he ask from the other drivers for medicine. Truly impressed.
Going from Taipei to Hualien
There’s two types of trains going between Hualien and Taipei, Tze-Chiang Limited Express and Chu-Kuang Express departing from Taipei Main station.
I would recommend you to take the train departing Taipei Main Station at 10.30am because it gives you ample of time to have breakfast in Taipei and make your way to the train station. You will reach Hualien at 12.48pm.
Taking the Tze Chiang train to Hualien from Taipei, a good tip would be to sit on the left side if you want to have ocean view during the train ride. Buy the odd seat number (e.g. 21,23,25). When you book the tickets online from the official Taiwan Railways Administration website, look for the Taroko Express (太魯閣號) as it is the fastest way to go from Taipei to Hualien. On the online train schedule, you won’t see “Taroko Express”, but you will see “Tze Chiang Limited Express”.
Purchase it online 2 weeks before your travel date to enjoy 20% discounts and guarantee you a seat during peak period. Key in your passport number when doing online booking via credit card. Bring along your passport and credit card to show at the counter when you redeem your train ticket at the station. (Note: Train was quite full when I took it)
Accommodation
When it comes to accommodation, I could only recommend Hualien B&B Stay.
Rooms:
Relax & Chill Corner:
The owner, Andy was very warm and offered to pick us up from the train station when we arrive into Hualien. And when he know I had vomited the night before, he offers to do gua sha (massage) whole body at no extra cost. The breakfast we had the next day was all prepared by his family from the jam which was made by themselves to the soya bean drink. He could even offered to packet the food for you if you are going to Taroko Gorge as food in National Park are often expensive and limited.
The location of the accommodation is within walking distance to Pacific Ocean. When we arrive in the afternoon, we pick our bicycles among 10 of it at his garage and we cycle leisurely along the ocean coast. Truly a relax atmosphere.

Hello !! May I know the name of the Hualien B&B stay that u booked for ur trip? I planning to go to Hualien in this coming Oct for 8D7N.
I plan for Hualien (Nighmarkets, Taroko, Qingshui cliff, qixing tan, some trails if possible and leisure cycle along the Pacific ocean coast as u suggested) (perhaps 2 nights). Then go to cingjing farm stay (1 night) > sun moon lake > alishan. Then either Kaoshiung (if time allow) and Taipei (上隐水产)
Thx

Hi Jaren 🙂
Thanks !!! Your blog really help on my plan.
Thx
Hi
May I know the Hualien B&B stay far away from the town area?
Because we would like to explore the Hualien Night market.
Thanks
Steven
Hi Steven,
I have sent you more details in the email. To add on, the owner was kind enough to bring us in his car to the night market. After which, he will pick us up at the same place where you are dropped off at a certain time.
Cheers

Hi 🙂
Would like to know more info as to how you got to the city area and the night market from your accommodation too. Thanks!
Cheers,
Dorothy
Hi Dorothy,
The owner of the Minsu would bring us to/from the night market/city area. Taiwanese are generally very friendly. So do check with them if they can give you a free ride down.

Hi!
I was just searching for a day trip on Hualien and I’m interested to use Mr. Lee’s service. But, can he speaks English as my family and I cannot speak Mandarin very well. And do you think that I need to tell him in advance or what is your suggestion?
Thanks.
Gaby
Oh, I communicate with him in Chinese. Perhaps, You can what app him first in simple english and see how it goes.
If not, should you be staying at a homestay, you can ask the owner to arrange one. They usually have good contacts too.
Hope it helps.

May I know if you went to Hua Lien city as well? Are there any public transport from your stay at Hua Lien bay to the city area?
Thanks!
Hi Ling,
The minsu owner brought us in his own car from Hua Lien Bay to the town area. Nevertheless, I saw there are buses plying the road to Hualien town.
That shouldnt be a problem.
My humble suggestion is to book an accomodation, preferably the minsu and ask the owner if he can drop you off in the city or the bus servivces from the accomodation to town. That would be better.
Cheers

Hi TheGuyTravel
Do you know if MR Lee, the driver has email address? I can type chinese and ask him for a quote for private car to get from Hualien to Cingjing.
Thanks
Hi Sisy,
Mr Lee, the driver do not have email address. He prefers to communicate using what app or his mobile. You may try doing so.
Mobile phone details found in this blog post.
Cheers!

Hi,
Would like to know the train tickets to Hualien, are we able to select our seat when booking online. What do You mean by select seats in odd numbers.
Thanks?
Serene
Hi Serene,
When I mentioned select the seats in odd numbers, it means you have to sit on the left side of the train to see the view even better.
Example: Seat 3, 5, 7.
You may refer to the website if keen on doing online booking: http://www.railway.gov.tw/en/booking.aspx?n=19679
However, I would recommend not to book until you are at the railway station if you are not travelling during peak season like in DEC.
Hope this info helps!
Regards,
TheGuyTravel

Hi, just want to check if there’s luggage space allocated in each cabin at the front or back of the Tze-Chiang Limited Express (Taroko/Puyuma) ? Or do we have to bring it to our seats? We each have 29″ luggage. Thank you.
Hi Stefani,
Yes there is space for luggage. But this is not very big. Do ensure you board the train quickly to get the space. The aisle seat might be squeezy to pull your baggge along as well.
Hi. Is there any guide on how to purchase the train tickets?
Hi Adeline,
I purchased tickets when I am at the train station. For HSR, I purchased one day before when I am there.
Cheers
