Located in the Eastern Europe or more commonly known as the Balkans Region, the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina is Sarajevo. It is a historical city with cobbled streets and an old town market (Bascarsija) which existed since the 15th century. I would recommend at least 2 nights in Sarajevo whereby the tourist district can be covered within an hour. With the average altitude of 500m above sea level, the major part of it lies the old town which comes along the beautifully designed buildings coloured with pretty graffiti.
As I had journey my way down to Sarajevo from the Croatian town of Dubrovnik, I took up the land tour organised by Sarajevo Funky Tours. This is one of the highly recommended tour agency. The reason why I had picked them was the competitive rate they offered, highly recommended reviews they got and certainly, I was not disappointed at all. Below a photo with my friendly handsome tour guide who makes it interesting for us with him sharing the history and stories of Bosnia.
A plus point is that the office representative (Ema) responds to your email inquiry very fast. It was an easy decision to take up the tour packages with them. A point to note is that they usually start their journey from Sarajevo whereby they are based and will drive to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Since they are in Dubrovnik, it only make sense for them to head back the same way by picking up tourists to Sarajevo. That was where I jumped onto this trip with them.
Travelling by public transport is not preferred in this instance as one will not find it easy to get to all the major tourist towns and fanciful places along the way. Thus, a good tip to travel from Bosnia into Croatia or vice versa is to get the tour packages which ferries one across the 2 borders while allowing one to enjoy the highlights of what Bosnia & Herzegovina offers.
Here are some of the must visit sights in Bosnia & Herzegovina that people often goes to.
#1: Mostar
Mostar is an important economic and cultural center of Herzegovina. It was named after an old bridge. The star attraction in this small town is the bridge whereby every year, we will see people performing jump stunts. It was so popular and important to Herzegovina that it was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. There is a sad history in this old town where war destroyed the livelihood of the locals and one can watch the short video on it in a museum. In summary, this town was simply a beauty to behold in today world.
#2: Blagaj
Located just 12km away from Mostar, one can find the famous spring of Buna river and had the opportunity to witness first hand the strongest karst spring in the territory of Europe. The Dervish Tekke in Blagaj is one of the most important cultural monuments in the country. One can choose to dine at the restaurant along the river bank with their feet being soaked in the water while dinning.
#3: Pocitelj
30km away from Mostar, there lies the magnificent Ottoman, medieval town- Pocitelj. Learn more of the local history and be amazed by the nicely preserved old buildings.
#4: Konjic
This city is known for hand woodworking which has been passed down for generations among the locals here. This area is blessed with extraordinary natural scenery. Extreme sports such as rafting have been popular in recent years here.
#5:Kravice Waterfall
They are so popular, in fact, that many does a day trip from Dubrovnik in Croatia just to see them. As the local guide shared, Canadians have even commented that it is more beautiful than Niagara falls in Toronto only amid in smaller scale. It was the prettiest waterfall I had seen in my life so far with crystal clear water and the gush of water cascading down the well shaped rocks, making a sight truly unforgettable. Even if you are short of time, Kravice waterall is a spot that you should not miss!
#6: Sarajevo Town
Baščaršija is the main tourist attraction of Sarajevo. Located in the very heart of the city, this bazaar is one of Sarajevo’s oldest wards as well as a well-preserved example of oriental architecture in the Balkans. One cannot help but notice the presence of bullet holes in many buildings of Sarajevo. This is the living proof the war it undergoes in recent history. Sniper alley (otherwise known as Suicide Alley) a street which was one of the deadliest during the Siege of Sarajevo. This tour is one of the most interesting tours you will ever go on.
