Bucharest the capital of Romania often explored by many visitors. But hey, have you thought of exploring beyond Bucharest? Travel to the unnoticed towns, there lies Brasov, Bran, Rasnov, Sibiu in Romania.
#1: BRASOV
Brasov, a city located in the Transylvania region of Romania is known for its medieval walls, gothic church style. The main square in Old Town is Piata Sfatului. Recommend to stay in this area for at least 2 nights with many cafes to chill and enjoy the slower pace of life that this town brings.
Start your day in Piata Sfatului also known as the council square. From here, many tourist attractions are within reach. This includes the magnificent Black Church and in the vicinity, admire children chasing pigeons in a relaxing fun manner. The gothic architecture makes this church stands out from the others.
Notice the Hollywood sign that reads the city name: Brasov? One can choose to hike up or take the cable car ride to the top and admire the beautiful city. Stroll along Basov streets filled with cafes, shops and most importantly, you cannot miss eating Kurtoskalacs. If you been to Prague before, one will see them selling Kurtoskalacs as well. However, the one in Romania is different in size, this is like a double up size. Eat it as the Romanians does it.
#2: RASNOV
Located a short bus ride from Rasnov, this town is on the way to Bran (which I will cover more later). Rasnov like her cousin (Brasov), does have the Hollywood sign as well located high up the hill top. The 14th century Rasnov Fortress was built to protect itself against nomadic European and Asian tribes from attacking her. Stone houses, old school are some of the buildings you will get to see in this small town. It is worthwhile to spend around 2 hours in this town.
#3: BRAN
You cannot mention to people that you had visited Romania before stepping into the town of Dracula. Yes, you are right! Dracula is indeed born from Romania and spread across the world. Bran is therefore one of the important tourist attractions in this country. The star of this small town is none other than the Bran Castle.
Bran castle or more popularly known as the Dracula Castle is located on a cliff. However, do not expect anything frightening in this castle. It was known as the birthplace of Dracula simply because Vlad the Impaler known to be a fierce ruler was living here. There are many shops selling Dracula souvenirs and even haunted house nearby the foot of the castle if you want to have a harrowing experience.
Getting to Bran involves taking bus from Autogara station 2, easily reach by taking public bus #16 from old town. The ride from Brasov Autogara Station 2 takes 30 minutes to arrive in Bran. However, you may consider having a stop at Rasnov which I had mentioned earlier in above post.
#4: Sibiu
Sibiu known to be a medieval centre filled with open squares, defence walls, towers and old churches. Sibiu is basically divided into lower and upper town. As you guessed it, the peasants lived in the Sibiu old town, down the steps in these colourful small houses.
Piata Mare, known as the big square is now home to events, fanciful restaurants and churches. When I was there in late November, the city had already kicked off its Christmas celebration by having the night market at this square.
If you want to know more about arts with works from Romanian and European artists, head to Brukenthal Museum.
Strada Nicolae Balcescu is a popular pedestrian street with many beautiful old houses surrounding the street. Many shopping outlets and filled with many people at all time.
Piata Mica, known as the smaller square is whereby the bridge of lies await you. The bridge of lies has ears and know when someone is not being honest. So bring your travel mate to this place and ask him/her to swear or tell you the truth. Notice the unique structure of the houses in Sibiu? They have eyes looking at you, one of the unusual style in this amazing county.
