Having mobile applications could work wonders, by allowing one to source for the best price, book your holiday on the move and storing critical travel information.
As there is so many applications in today’s world, here’s a quick guide on what are the essential mobile applications one should have at the very least. (Note: Apply more to Singapore Context travellers)
1) Changi Airport Application
You need this to check your latest flight information. What’s the boarding gate number, which terminal or row should you check-in? These are essential information you need on the go.
2) Weather Application
You need it, let’s face it. Weather is critical information and able you to forecast the expected weather conditions upon arrival.
3) Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA@SG)
Before travelling, always remember to register with Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You will never know when accident happen in the country you are visiting. As such, it is important to keep your loved ones backed home updated by registering with MFA. They will try their best to contact you in times of chaos and ensure you are accounted for. In times of emergency evacuation, you will not be missed out. Don’t underestimate the importance of it!

A few online travel agents would have now leverage the use of mobile application to grab hold their market share and retain their customers. The best way to source for deals would be downloading these applications. They range from Zuji, Wego, cheapflights, skyscanner to look for best flight deal.
If you do not know what Zuji exactly does? Fret not, here is the link to Zuji which is an increasing popular choice for online booking. Zuji allow users to search, compare and book cheap flights, accommodation and other travel packages. One can now do a quick search on flight deals easily by using Zuji mobile Application when you are away from your conventional desktop/laptop.
For search on hotels using mobile application, why not use Agoda that allows one to book easily, store your card information (Disadvantage is that whoever have access to your phone can simply book rooms using your card although one can disable the credit card storage use). Booking on Agoda allows me to easily show my booking over the hotel check-in counter instead of printing the paper out. It also shows you the directions to the hotel on your mobile.
5) Individual Airline Applications
In today’s world, most airlines develop their own mobile applications. It makes no sense to download the different mobile applications. However, you should download commonly used low cost carrier mobile application such as Scoot, JetStar, TigerAir, AirAsia as these carriers often allows one to enjoy promotional fares on the applications. They do not distribute their fares across online travel agents platform except using meta-search companies such as SkyScanner.
6) SeatGuru Mobile Application
Before checking in at the airport counter, ensure you have the seats you want during your flight. Don’t know which is the best seat number available? Fret not, use SeatGuru application as it will tell you which seat number you should choose simply by keying in your flight number on the application.
7) Airline Alliance Mobile Application
Let’s say you are a member of a frequent airline alliance, then downloading OneWorld, Star Alliance would be useful. One could check your points easily, enjoy the offers and premiums at the airport.
8) Language Translation Application
The importance of having such applications couldn’t be emphasis more. It comes in handy when you encounter language difficulties with the locals. And these applications goes a long way to helping you to overcome these basic carrier. On the other hand, should you have free time on board aircraft or in between waiting time, there is no harm to listen and learn the basic words such as Hello, Thank you, How are you, etc.
